Summary:

In this webinar "Sustainability in Pharmacy – Actions to protect the environment," Dr Aisling O’Leary, a senior lecturer at the School of Pharmacy and bimolecular sciences in the Royal College of Surgeons, discusses the interconnectedness of Earth's systems and the impact of human activities on the natural world. She emphasises the importance of planetary health and the concept of the five planetary boundaries, which include protecting the planet and natural resources and climate. Aisling highlights the environmental impact of greenhouse gases, novel chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, and discusses various initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental harm in the pharmaceutical industry.

She encourages pharmacists to contribute to sustainability efforts by reducing resource use, decarbonisation, and exploring opportunities to reduce waste and reuse medicines. Aisling emphasises the positive outcomes of sustainability efforts for the environment, society, and finances and encourages individuals and the profession as a whole to become planetary stewards and take action.
