Summary:

In this week’s webinar, the HSE Knowledge and Skills Framework for Healthcare Professionals Working with Older People is presented, addressing the need for a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to providing patient care for older adults. The speakers discuss the background to the framework, outlining why and how it was developed in addition to the content of the framework, and how it can be applied to support interdisciplinary collaboration and enhance integrated person-centered care. The webinar provides a spotlight on the evolving roles of pharmacists and advanced practice in this setting. This is in the context of Ireland's aging population and the complexities of geriatric health issues including frailty and chronic conditions. The framework is presented as a tool that guides healthcare teams in advancing their competencies and ultimately, optimising the delivery of patient care. The five domains of the framework are detailed, expanding on the development of core competencies and also addressing core and enhanced skills. The importance of ongoing professional development is also outlined. The webinar identifies opportunities presented by the framework, resources needed to support the framework in practice and also addresses challenges to implementation.
