Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct is a public declaration of the principles and ethical standards which govern pharmacists in the practice of their profession, and which the public, patients, other healthcare professionals and society require and expect from pharmacists.

The Code of Conduct contains seven principles that apply to all registered pharmacists and ensure that all pharmacists practise in a way that maintains and improves the health, wellbeing, care and safety of patients.

The seven principles are as follows:

  • Principle One: Put the Patient First
  • Principle Two: Act Professionally
  • Principle Three: Communicate Effectively
  • Principle Four: Work with Others
  • Principle Five: Show Leadership
  • Principle Six: Maintain Competence
  • Principle Seven: Be Open and Honest

You can access and download the Code of Conduct here. The Code also provides direction on how compliance with each principle is demonstrated.

You can access the PSI video "Introduction to the Code of Conduct for Pharmacists", and further information about the Code of Conduct on the PSI website here.

PSI Ethical Decision Making Tool

Ethical dilemmas can happen every day in practice. The ability to make sound ethical decisions is a fundamental responsibility of pharmacists as healthcare professionals. The PSI's Ethical Decision Making Tool is designed to support pharmacists as a guide in decision making when they are presented with an ethical dilemma or issue. Further information can be found on the PSI website: Decision Making Tool.
