Applications are now open for NUI Galway's next student intake for the Masters Degree and Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) in Preventive Cardiology. The programme is aimed at all healthcare professionals with and interest or role in the prevention and control of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity; such as physicians, nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists, physical activity specialists, pharmacists, psychologists, occupational therapists, sports scientists, health promotion and public health specialists.

The MSc lasts 1 full year (Sept – Sept) and the PGDip is 9-months (Sept – June). The course has online learning and guided self-directed learning dimensions as well as residential elements, enabling students to adapt their learning to their professional lives. The residential component is delivered in the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre, providing students with a unique opportunity to actively engage with patients participating in preventive cardiology programmes within the facility.

All students are required to: attend face-to-face teaching (2 days per month on average); complete directed self-study and interactive online learning materials at a distance; and fulfil a number of learning and
implementation tasks in a clinical environment. Students not working in a relevant clinical environment for the duration of the course are required to reside as an intern, joining the Croí multidisciplinary health team in a wide-range of health initiatives targeted at preventing cardiovascular disease, saving lives and promoting recovery and wellbeing.

In addition to the above, all students are required to complete 10 clinical observation visits in other key preventive cardiology environments to their own e.g. community screening initiatives, cardiovascular risk reduction clinics, cardiology out-patients, cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes and heart failure to name but a few. This provides an important opportunity for every student to be exposed to current service delivery and opportunities to implement their learning across a wide range of health settings. Finally in addition to the above, MSc students are required to complete a primary research project.
