Summary:
The webinar ‘Prescription Extension – What you need to know to get started’ focuses on the Expert Taskforce to Support the Expansion of the Role of Pharmacy, Phase 1 Recommendations on prescription extension. The purpose of the webinar is to provide signposting to supports and information regarding legislative changes as they relate to prescription extension.
In response to Recommendation 1 of the Expert Taskforce, IIOP procured through open tender, a suite of resources to sit within the IIOP resource hub for pharmacists.
The panellists - Dr Matthew Lynch, Dr Aisling O’Leary, and Ms Claire O’Neill - a project team from RCSI School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences - successfully tendered and subsequently developed these resources which consist of:
-
Introductory webinar
-
Toolkit including case studies, decision making tool, and supporting resources
-
Interactive workshops with a focus on the practical application of the toolkit
Legislative provision and regulatory requirements of prescription extension are detailed, providing context and background for the resources.
The panellists guide attendees through the resources including each of the six steps of the prescription extension decision making tool, linking to other references and resources throughout. The decision making tool aids in assessing an individual patient’s eligibility for prescription extension.
Effective communication between pharmacists and patients and shared decision making are highlighted as central to the decision-making process around prescription extension.
The key takeaways from the discussion include how prescription extension builds on existing professional practice in the delivery of person-centred care, regulatory requirements and guidance in place for prescription extension, shared decision-making, planning points for incorporating prescription extension into pharmacy practice, and resources available for support.
IIOP Pharmacist, Dawn Davin, outlines how the suite of resources can be accessed on the IIOP website and also how to book on to the upcoming workshops.
