Summary:
Marie provides an overview of antimicrobial stewardship and highlights the global burden of antimicrobial resistance, including European and Irish data and emphasising the need to rationalise antibiotic use. Results are presented from the national point prevalence survey (acute hospital setting) and antibiotic quality improvement initiative for community prescribers. Marie also provides information on the AMRIC GP team, Pharmacist Antimicrobial Stewardship Network (PAMS-net) AMRIC/Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP) joint collaboration, European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) and how to access AMRIC resources. Marie highlights the importance of engagement and sharing information to enhance patient safety is also highlighted.
Mary focuses on the AMRIC Acute Services Team and the acute hospital setting including aspects of governance, measurement & management, education and guidance, and quality improvement perspective. Various aspects of governance toolkits are outlined including audit tools using the example of surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis. Details of how to access AMRIC supportive materials are provided, including communication and education supports and the AMRIC adapted WHO classification of antibiotics.
Mala focuses on antimicrobial stewardship in community settings. She provides an overview of the National Antimicrobial Prescribing Guidelines, including the rationalisation and safe prescribing in different patient cohorts. Mala provides guideline updates in the area of respiratory tract infections. Prescribing decision aids for use in the management of urinary tract infections in residential care settings as well as ‘Good Practice Points’ and other resources are signposted. Mala introduces the ‘Bugs & Drugs’ quizzes aimed at increasing awareness and rationalisation of antibiotic prescribing, available through PAMS-net.
