Speaker:

  • Leonie Clarke, Chief Executive of the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO)

Summary:

The Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) was enacted in Ireland to combat the growing threat of falsified medicines in the supply chain, introducing safety features such as barcodes and anti-tamper devices, as well as establishing a medicines verification system. Leonie Clarke in this webinar provides an update on the implementation of the FMD after the end of the "use and learn" period, discussing the roles and responsibilities of various organisations involved, the progress made, and some of the issues and potential problems that may arise. They also highlight the importance of communication and the support provided by the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO). They conclude by discussing the potential for FMD compliance to add value beyond the code scan for new components, including tracking adherence and patients, improving expiry date management, and healthcare assistant digitalisation.
