This programme provides a practical educational resource on antimicrobial stewardship, equipping pharmacists with the knowledge and tools to optimise antibiotic use for patients and the public.

As 90% of antimicrobial use in Ireland is in community settings, this programme focuses on supporting community pharmacists to apply stewardship principles in daily practice.

Delivered as an interactive eLearning course, it introduces existing systems and supports, signposts to current resources, and uses clinical scenarios to demonstrate best practice.

This IIOP training programme builds awareness of antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, and highlights the pharmacist’s role in optimising antibiotic use and reducing harm in a person-centred approach.

At the end of this programme learners will:

  • be able to explain the basic principles of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) & antimicrobial resistance,
  • understand the role of AMRIC, the national clinical programme for antimicrobial resistance and infection control,
  • understand national AMS initiatives and their rationale, including the preferred antibiotics for use in the community Red Green classification,
  • know how to access the relevant supports & clinical resources,
  • identify key considerations to maximize benefit and minimize harm for the people taking antimicrobials,
  • apply AMS principles with increased confidence in everyday practice.
