Summary:

In this webinar, participants are provided with an introduction to the topic of suicide. At the outset, the webinar highlights the emotional weight of discussing suicide and encourages attendees to practice self-care, utilising resources including www.yourmentalhealth.ie

The speakers detailed the practical steps to take when concerned that a person may be thinking about suicide. To support learning in context, the webinar features a case study detailing the presentation of a young man in distress to a community pharmacy setting, illustrating the need for empathetic conversation and proactive support. The speakers emphasised the importance of sensitive language, providing examples, and, the need for supportive communication to foster understanding. The importance of asking appropriate questions was discussed, which included a four-step approach (CALM: Connect, Ask, Listen, Make a plan) for effectively engaging with individuals in distress. Details of how free suicide prevention training can be accessed were provided.

Overall, the session encourages a collaborative approach to suicide prevention, equipping participants with practical strategies and resources to support those in need.
