Summary:

In this webinar "Expansion of the Role of the Pharmacist: What's coming in 2024," features presentations from Joanne Kissane, CEO/Registrar, Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) Cora O’Connell, Professional Standards Manager, Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) and Dr Pat O’Mahony, Chair Expert Taskforce, along with Dr Catriona Bradley, Executive Director, Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP).

Before the webinar, over 1,000 questions were submitted, and three key themes emerging: the details of phase one services, the broader strategic plan for pharmacy development, and training required and supports available. Although not all questions could be answered during this webinar, those not addressed would be considered after it.

Some of the topics covered included the progress of the task force's phases, the importance of pharmacist training, prescription extension rules, and the potential expansion of pharmacist roles in providing medicines and vaccines to patients. They also discussed ongoing dialogue with the medical council, GPs' involvement in the implementation process, and updates to the citizen's information website regarding prescription extension changes.

Dr. Catriona Bradley emphasised the importance of communication and connection within the pharmacy community and encouraged colleagues to explore resources available on the Institute's website and reach out with their needs and concerns.
